What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an air conditioning system that can be run in reverse to produce heat during colder weather. Heat pumps are versatile, efficient cooling and heating systems. Thanks to a reversing valve, a heat pump can change the flow of refrigerant and either heat or cool a home. Air is blown over an evaporator coil, transferring heat energy from the air to the refrigerant. That heat energy is circulated in the refrigerant to a condenser coil, where it is released as a fan blows air across the coil. Through this process, heat is pumped from one place to another.

What’s great about a heat pump is its energy efficiency. Heat pumps operate on electricity rather than fossil fuels and are up to 3 times more cost-effective to run than electric heat, so they’ll save you money on heating bills.

Heat pumps work best when the average outdoor temperature remains at 45°F or higher, but most Friedrich heat pumps also come with electric heat that will automatically come on and operates as a space heater when the heat pump is no longer able to maintain the desired indoor temperature.

Why is this Important?

Instead of burning fuel, heat pump models work by transferring heat, making them capable of operating as both a heating and cooling system. While some room air conditioner manufacturers are still struggling to comply with stronger regulations that call for the use of more environmentally-beneficial refrigerants, Friedrich Air Conditioning is continuing to set the pace with a wide variety of choices ready and available to meet the latest standards.

Specifically, Friedrich offers a range of room A/C products that utilize the next generation refrigerant known as R-32 and comply with California’s stringent state regulations. Enacted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), these regulations mandate a phasedown of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants for HVAC equipment manufactured on January 1, 2023, or later. Other states are beginning to follow suit and federal standards also are under consideration, requiring lower-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant in the near future.

For years, Friedrich has been ahead of the decarbonization curve by using R-32, which has just one-third of the GWP as compared to the more commonly used hydrofluorocarbon, R-410A. The company began incorporating R-32 for many of its products as early as 2015. Other environmental advantages of R-32 include higher operating efficiencies, zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and significant reductions in the total amount of refrigerant needed per unit.

Friedrich Floating Air® Ductless Mini-Split System's heat pumps are super efficient and operate in extreme temps- down to -13°F. Whether the goal is to heat and cool a single room or multiple rooms, Friedrich has quieter and more energy-efficient ductless split system solutions. Choose from sleek wall-mounted models, ceiling cassettes that mount flush with the ceiling, and ducted units that install out of sight for up to four multiple zones of cooling and heating. Kühl® Heat Pump

Room heat pumps are an excellent way to provide energy-efficient heating in temperatures down to 45° F. Heat pumps are a smart alternative to heating your entire home with a oil, coal or gas furnace. Friedrich Kühl® Heat Pumps offer wireless control via smartphone app or by voice command for even greater energy savings.

North American-built Friedrich Kühl is also available in lower-global warming potential (GWP) R-32 refrigerant models, which comply with California’s stringent state regulations (California Air Resources Board -CARB) and increases efficiency. Friedrich Kühl is also the only room AC available with MERV 13 filtration to guard against spreading infectious airborne particles.
